Sixteen Plus - Private Tutors

A private tutor is often a game-changer during the 16+ process. For many this is a taboo topic, unspoken among parents; however, I can tell you it is very common. It offers

Individualised Attention

With a private tutor, your child receives one-on-one attention. Unlike teachers in a classroom setting, tutors can address specific problem areas, dynamically adjust teaching methods to suit your child's learning style, and move at their pace.

Extra Curricular Content

For many parts of the 16+, the content is not covered in the majority of school. For example, the reasoning parts of the exams. A tutor will give access to this kind of practice.

Boosting Confidence

A private tutor can help boost your child's confidence as they prepare for the 16+ exam by providing reassurance and strategies for overcoming exam anxieties.

Convenience and Flexibility

Unlike in traditional teaching set-ups, tutors offer a flexible schedule that works best for your child and you. They can tutor at home, online, or at a convenient location, eliminating the time spent commuting.

How to Prepare for the Sixteen Plus Exam

In this Section, we discuss the ways to prepare for the 16 plus exam, including understanding the ways to research the schools to which you want to apply. You will have to address the following questions:

  • What school do I want to apply to?
  • What are the entry requirements for that school?
  • What resources do I use to prepare for the 16 plus exams?
  • How to find an 16 plus private tutor?

What is tested in the 16+ exam?

Most independent schools test English, Maths, subject-specific papers, and an interview. English and Maths are based on higher-tier GCSE content. Some schools also include Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning to assess logic and pattern recognition. Top candidates usually work at or above Grade 8/9 level and are ready for A-level or IB study.

Pattern Recognition
This area evaluates the ability of the child to identify abstract patterns and sequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

01. My child lacks confidence—how will tutoring help?

Many students struggle with confidence, especially if they’ve had a bad experience in school or feel overwhelmed by the subject. Our tutoring approach helps students build confidence by breaking down difficult topics, reinforcing understanding, and celebrating progress.

02. My child is already working hard—why are they still struggling?

Studying isn’t just about memorising facts; your child must learn how to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, especially in exams. Many students put in hours of revision but struggle with exam technique, structuring answers, or understanding mark schemes. A tutor can help identify and address these specific challenges.

03. How do I know if the tutoring is working?

We track progress through regular assessments, exam-style questions, and feedback from both the student and tutor. You’ll receive updates on improvements, areas of focus, and strategies for further progress.

04. Which exam boards do you cover?

We tutor for AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC and CIE exam boards. We also cover the International Baccalaureate (IB)

05. How do online tutoring sessions work?

We set up a learning space which is joined at the time of a session. In the learning space, students are on video call with our tutors and use an interactive whiteboard with resources. Parents and students are often surprised how easy it is!

06. How often should my child have tutoring sessions?

This depends on their current level and goals. Some students benefit from weekly sessions for consistent progress, while others may prefer more intensive lessons closer to exams. We can recommend a schedule based on your child’s needs.

07. What if my child has a busy schedule?

We offer flexible scheduling, including evening and weekend sessions, to fit around your child’s commitments. Tutoring is designed to be productive and efficient, so even one hour a week can make a significant difference when supported with independent study.

08. Is there a trial available?

Yes! We offer a paid trial so your child can meet the tutor and experience online tutoring before committing. We use the trial to make an assessment and demonstrate how we can help.

We select tutors with exceptional academic backgrounds, proven experience in helping students reach their goals, and in-depth knowledge of exam board requirements.
