Economics at Oxford and Cambridge represents the pinnacle of undergraduate economic education, combining rigorous theoretical foundations with real-world applications. As admissions consultants, we’ve guided numerous students to successful offers in Economics at both universities, and we understand exactly what it takes to stand out in this highly competitive field.
Why Economics at Oxbridge is Worth Pursuing
Both Oxford and Cambridge offer world-class Economics programmes that attract the brightest minds globally. These courses don’t just teach economic theory—they develop analytical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills that define future leaders in finance, policy, and business.
What Makes Oxford Economics and Management Unique:
- The Economics and Management degree examines issues central to the world we live in, examining how the economy and organisations function, and how resources are allocated and coordinated to achieve the organisation’s objectives
- The teaching of this course is provided by both the Department of Economics and Saïd Business School. However, it is not a Business Studies degree. The programme is taught as an academic subject within the Social Sciences Division of the University
- There are three modules in first year, all of which are compulsory. These are Introductory Economics, Financial Management and General Management
- In the second and third years, students must take three compulsory economics and two management courses, and three of their choosing
What Makes Cambridge Economics Distinctive:
- There are three parts of the Economics Tripos. In Part I (the first year) everyone takes the same five papers: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Methods in Economics, Sociology and Politics, and British Economic History since 1750
- Past and present Faculty members, such as Alfred Marshall and John Maynard Keynes, have played a major role in the subject’s development. Several members of our Faculty have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics
- The Economics Tripos shall consist of three Parts: Part I, Part IIa, and Part IIb. A separate class-list shall be published for each Part
Understanding the Key Differences Between Oxford and Cambridge Economics
This is crucial for prospective applicants to understand, as the courses are fundamentally different in structure and approach.
Oxford’s Approach – Economics and Management:
- Oxford offers students a BA in Economics and Management whereas Cambridge offers a BA in just Economics with Oxford allowing students to specialise in Management too
- Oxford E&M on the other hand, is more of a balance between essays and maths. There’s no compulsory dissertation, and in the first year are no history/politics orientated modules – instead the modules are economics, general management and financial management
- Oxford requires students to take less compulsory papers, than economics at Cambridge. This allows for students to follow up their passion on a diverse range of optional papers or a thesis
Cambridge’s Approach – Pure Economics:
- The Cambridge course is much more mathematical, and essentially by the final year is an applied statistics degree. The emphasis on maths is heavy, although in the first year you also would take some more history/politics orientated papers. You would also have to do a compulsory dissertation
- Cambridge offers only single honours Economics, which includes course options in a broad range of subfields. The course places a higher emphasis on more mathematical disciplines
- The Cambridge Economics course is rigorous and uses mathematical models to analyse economic problems
Understanding the Competitive Landscape
Economics remains one of the most competitive subjects at both universities. Oxford E&M has a 6% acceptance rate whilst Cambridge Economics acceptance rates are similarly selective. However, strong preparation and expert guidance significantly improve your chances of success.

Tip 4: Excel in the Interview Process
Oxford Interview Structure
For economics interview, students answer maths questions given by tutors one at a time with time to think and write down and discuss answers. The questions started with A2 pure ones and went on to more testing ones where they wanted to see how students applied current knowledge. The second part was a decision making exercise involving an output matrix with various questions relating to different scenarios
Management interview was completely different with questions by the tutors about the subject, such as ‘what do you understand strategic management to be?’. Then there were questions about any articles read and one or two about the subject
Cambridge Interview Approach
Based on the highly mathematical nature of the course, Cambridge interviews focus heavily on:
- Mathematical problem-solving under pressure
- Economic reasoning and model application
- Statistical interpretation and analysis
- Demonstration of quantitative thinking skills

FAQs
My child lacks confidence—how will tutoring help?
Many students struggle with confidence, especially if they’ve had a bad experience in school or feel overwhelmed by the subject. Our tutoring approach helps students build confidence by breaking down difficult topics, reinforcing understanding, and celebrating progress.
My child is already working hard—why are they still struggling?
Studying isn’t just about memorising facts; your child must learn how to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, especially in exams. Many students put in hours of revision but struggle with exam technique, structuring answers, or understanding mark schemes. A tutor can help identify and address these specific challenges.
How do I know if the tutoring is working?
We track progress through regular assessments, exam-style questions, and feedback from both the student and tutor. You’ll receive updates on improvements, areas of focus, and strategies for further progress.
Which exam boards do you cover?
We tutor for AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC and CIE exam boards. We also cover the International Baccalaureate (IB)
How do online tutoring sessions work?
We set up a learning space which is joined at the time of a session. In the learning space, students are on video call with our tutors and use an interactive whiteboard with resources. Parents and students are often surprised how easy it is!
How often should my child have tutoring sessions?
This depends on their current level and goals. Some students benefit from weekly sessions for consistent progress, while others may prefer more intensive lessons closer to exams. We can recommend a schedule based on your child’s needs.
What if my child has a busy schedule?
We offer flexible scheduling, including evening and weekend sessions, to fit around your child’s commitments. Tutoring is designed to be productive and efficient, so even one hour a week can make a significant difference when supported with independent study.
Why are Greenhill Academics tutors considered the best you can find?
