FAQs
How does online private tutoring work?
When working with a private tutor, it’s natural to question the process by which the online tutoring occurs. How different is online private tuition to normal teaching?
We can break the question into two parts: tutoring and online.
Tutoring
The tutoring part is exactly what it says on the tin. The process occurs when a student and a capable and verified tutor meet to transfer educational information. They have previously agreed on the subject and during the session there is a deep-dive into the weaknesses of the student. The student leaves feeling accomplished and improved after gaining knowledge that will enable them to progress in their chosen subject.
Online
Online is tech-enabled tutoring, through the internet. It provides new-found efficiency by using online platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, or, in our case, ClassIn. This means that you can access the best tutor from wherever you have an internet connection. These platforms allow tutors to share information in two main ways: screen share or document sharing.
Online tutoring goes further by saving sharable recordings of the lesson. The student can revisit these whenever they need to come back to the content when they, for example, need to revise for an exam or need to complete a future assignment.
Interestingly, in an online setting a student most likely will never meet their tutor face-to-face. For some, this may remove a seemingly vital part of the learning process, however, for others it opens up a new, more continuous line of communication that provides a more in-your-pocket tutor where the tutor is there when you need them, without a need for either party commute.
Is online tutoring effective?
In short, yes, it is very effective. After the Covid-19 pandemic, teachers were forced to move their teaching content online, however this has proved to be a blessing in disguise as it’s enabled students to find an improved way of learning. According to recent surveys,
98% of students feel like online tutoring positively effects their learning
It is a common concern that students will not engage well with the transition to the online learning environment, but studies show that this is far from the case. 98% of students who have worked with an online tutor say that it has been effective in their learning.
Online tutoring is easier to schedule
When you consider online private tutoring, you can schedule lessons in the smallest of time gaps. If you only have a gap between 6 and 8 but no spare time to commute to a tutor, you can fit someone right in that gap. You can also link your calendars to online platforms.
Students can use interactive tools
There is a seamless link between the tutor and the student allows both parties to annotate and work with shared documents. On the online tutoring platform that Greenhill Academics uses, there is an interactive blackboard that allows writing, typing, and highlighting.
Is online tutoring better than online in-person tuition?
This question completely depends on what you’re looking for in a tutor. For some, the face-to-face component of private tuition is vital, but for others, speed, efficiency, and flexibility is key. At Greenhill Academics, we see a shift in culture occurring where slowly, more and more people are choosing online tutors overs in-person ones. This is for the following reasons:
Quality is hard to find in-person
Let’s say you’re looking for a University Admissions Test Tutor for Oxford or Cambridge and you live in a small town outside a major city. There are going to be very few options for you in this case. Your best bet is to use online tuition to make sure you don’t miss out.
Private Online tutoring allows you to own your lesson
We get it, private tuition is expensive and you want to get the most value from your time with your tutor. The last thing we want is for you to miss a note on something vital and to have lost value in your contact time. You can take the recording of your lesson and watch it back on-demand.
The speed of content covered is increased
Just like all other parts of online private tuition, speed is increased. This has several effects that compound to increase the speed of learning. The teacher has a prepared bank of learning materials ready to transfer to the student; with just a few clicks, topics can be changed to focus on students’ areas of weakness; cadence of lessons can be increased because of the lack of commute.
Online Tutoring is cheaper than in-person tutoring
Tutors don’t have to pay for trains, petrol, or cars; just their internet connection. This gets passed onto you, which means that you get faster, better, and cheaper private tuition. This is not to say that online private tuition is cheap—it’s not. When you want a competent tutor, you should still expect to get what you pay for.
How much does online private tutoring cost?
At Greenhill Academics, online private tuition is charged depending on the experience of the tutor and on the number of sessions required. For example, for some students, advanced university level work requires a very specialised tutor and therefore will be more expensive. Rates very between £75/hour and £150/hour. All tuition is bespoke and packages are tailored to the individual student, work required, and goals.
