GCSE English Language is one of the most misunderstood exams at GCSE level. Students often prepare for it by learning lists of techniques, metaphor, personification, sibilance, and then spotting them in texts and naming them. That approach produces a grade 5 or 6. It does not produce a grade 9.

A grade 9 in GCSE English Language requires something different. The examiner wants to see a student who reads analytically, writes with genuine control, and can explain the effect of language choices in specific, thoughtful terms. This post covers what that looks like on both papers, for both students and parents supporting their revision.

The difference between a grade 6 and a grade 9

A grade 6 answer identifies a technique and says what it does generally. A grade 9 answer explains the specific effect it creates in this text and connects it to the writer’s broader purpose. That thinking gap is what separates the two grades.

What do GCSE English Language grade 9 answers actually look like?

The mark schemes for GCSE English Language describe top-band reading answers as “perceptive” and “detailed.” They describe top-band writing answers as “compelling” and “sophisticated.” These words sound vague, but they have a precise meaning in practice. Perceptive means the student has noticed something about the text that is not obvious. Compelling means the writing has a clear voice, varied structure, and deliberate effect on the reader.

Both qualities are learnable. Neither requires exceptional natural ability. They require practice, good feedback, and a clear understanding of what the examiner is rewarding.

Go beyond identifying techniques

The most common reason students plateau in GCSE English Language is that their analysis stops at identification. “The writer uses a metaphor” earns one mark. “The writer uses a metaphor to suggest the character is trapped, positioning the reader to feel pity before the tension builds” earns four. The technique is only the starting point. The effect on the reader, the tone it creates, and how it connects to the wider purpose of the text are where the marks live.

Train yourself to ask three questions about every technique you find: What does it mean literally? What does it suggest? Why has the writer chosen it here, at this point in the text?

Use specific evidence, not general summaries

Grade 9 answers quote precisely and briefly. They do not copy out three lines of text and then make a general comment. They lift a specific word or short phrase, embed it in their own sentence, and explain exactly what that word or phrase does. “The word ‘lurched’ implies a loss of control, suggesting the character is overwhelmed before we are told this directly” is stronger than quoting a full sentence and writing “this shows the character is scared.”

How do you improve GCSE English Language writing for a grade 9?

The writing section of GCSE English Language is where many students leave marks behind. They write competently but not distinctively. A grade 9 piece of writing has a clear voice, a sense of structure, and deliberate choices at the sentence level. These are habits that can be built.

Plan before you write

Students who spend five minutes planning before they write consistently produce better work than those who begin immediately. A plan does not need to be detailed. It needs to establish three things: the overall effect you want to create on the reader, the structure of the piece, and two or three specific techniques you will use deliberately. Writing with a plan means every paragraph has a purpose. That sense of control is what examiners describe as “sophisticated.”

Vary sentence structure deliberately

Grade 9 writing uses sentence structure as a tool. A very short sentence after several long ones creates emphasis. A sentence that begins with a subordinate clause builds anticipation before the main point lands. Repetition used purposefully creates rhythm. These are not tricks. They are the same techniques the student analyses in the reading section, applied in their own writing. Practising them consciously in timed writing exercises, then checking whether they worked, builds the instinct that examiners reward.

Read widely outside of school texts

The students who write most naturally at grade 9 level tend to read widely. Journalism, short fiction, essays, and quality non-fiction all model the kind of varied, controlled prose that GCSE English Language rewards. Reading a well-written article and asking “what is this writer doing, and why?” is one of the most effective forms of English revision. It builds vocabulary, instinct for structure, and an awareness of how language creates effects, all of which transfer directly to both papers.

Manage your time across both papers

Both GCSE English Language papers are time-pressured. The reading questions and the writing task need to be balanced carefully. Students who spend too long on early reading questions and rush the writing section lose the marks available on what is often the highest-scoring single question on the paper. Knowing the mark allocation for every question on your specific exam board and planning your time accordingly is one of the simplest improvements a student can make before sitting the exam.

Practise the comparison question separately

The comparison question on Paper 2 asks students to compare how writers present a theme or idea across two texts. This is a distinct skill from single-text analysis and many students practise it least. A strong comparison answer moves between the two texts fluidly, using comparative connectives to link points rather than writing about one text and then the other in separate halves. Practising this question type specifically, at least once a week in the run-up to the exam, makes a real difference to the final score.

What do A Level Biology A* answers actually look like?

The A* threshold in A Level Biology is set at the overall UMS boundary, but it is won question by question through consistent precision. The examiners are looking for correct biological terminology used accurately, logical chains of reasoning that connect cause to effect, and answers that address the specific question asked rather than demonstrating general knowledge of a topic.

A student who writes “the enzyme works better at higher temperatures” will score fewer marks than one who writes “increased temperature increases the kinetic energy of enzyme and substrate molecules, increasing the frequency of successful collisions and the rate of enzyme-substrate complex formation.” Both students know the biology. Only one is writing it in a way the examiner can reward.

Use precise biological terminology

A Level Biology mark schemes are built around specific terms. “Phospholipid bilayer” earns marks where “cell membrane” does not. “Complementary base pairing” earns marks where “matching bases” does not. “Hydrolysis” earns marks where “broken down” does not. This is not pedantry. It is the difference between demonstrating biological understanding and demonstrating a vague familiarity with a topic.

Keep a running glossary of key terms for each topic as you work through the course. Test yourself on definitions regularly. In the exam, use the technical term every time one exists.

Write in chains, not statements

The longer questions in A Level Biology, typically worth 4 to 6 marks, reward chains of reasoning rather than lists of facts. Each point should lead to the next: cause, mechanism, effect. If the question asks you to explain how a nerve impulse is transmitted, the A* answer does not list steps. It connects them. Depolarisation occurs because sodium ions move in along their electrochemical gradient. This reverses the membrane potential. The action potential propagates because the local current depolarises the adjacent membrane. Each sentence earns a mark because each sentence moves the argument forward.

How should you revise A Level Biology to reach an A*?

A Level Biology covers a large volume of content across two years. Students who try to revise everything equally tend to run out of time before the harder topics get the attention they need. A* revision is deliberate. It prioritises the topics that carry the most marks and the question types that most students answer poorly.

Read examiner reports, not just mark schemes

Every exam board publishes examiner reports after each sitting. These documents explain in the examiner’s own words what distinguished the top answers from the average ones. They identify the misconceptions that cost students marks and the phrases that consistently appeared in A* responses. A student who reads three or four examiner reports for their specific topics will understand what the examiner actually wants in a way that no revision guide can replicate.

Practise the 6-mark questions separately

The extended response questions in A Level Biology are where the A* is won or lost. Most students practise them least because they are the most time-consuming. Set aside one session per week to write full answers to 6-mark questions, then mark them against the mark scheme and examiner report. Focus on whether your answer contains the correct number of distinct marking points and whether each point uses precise terminology. Required practicals appear in every A Level Biology paper. Questions about experimental design, variables, controls, and analysis of results are predictable. What A Level Biology exam technique do top-grade students use?

Answer the question that is asked

One of the most consistent pieces of feedback in A Level Biology examiner reports is that students write everything they know about a topic rather than answering the specific question. If the question asks you to explain why the rate of photosynthesis decreases at high temperatures, the answer is about enzyme denaturation and the loss of the active site shape. It is not a full account of the light-dependent and light-independent reactions. Reading the question twice before writing, and checking your answer addresses it directly before moving on, removes a significant source of avoidable mark loss.

Use the mark allocation as a guide

The number of marks on a question tells you how many distinct points the examiner expects. A 3-mark explain question requires three separate, creditworthy statements. A student who writes one detailed sentence has answered one of those three marks. Count your points before moving on. If the question is worth 4 marks and you have written two points, there are two marks still available.

Tackle data response questions methodically

A Level Biology papers include questions based on unfamiliar data, graphs, and experimental results. These questions test the ability to apply biological knowledge to new contexts. The biology being tested is always from the specification. Read the data carefully, identify what biological principle is being illustrated, and apply your knowledge to it. Students who panic at unfamiliar data and leave these questions blank are giving up marks that are within reach.

Most students who fall short of an A in AQA A Level Maths can do the maths. They understand the topics, they practise the past papers, and they still come out with a B. The issue is almost never knowledge. It is nearly always in how they apply it under exam conditions.

An A requires consistent accuracy across Pure Maths, Statistics, and Mechanics. That means building habits around method, presentation, and time management that hold up in a two-hour exam. This post covers what those habits look like in practice, for both students preparing for their exams and parents supporting them at home.

A grade B usually means skipped steps, rushed working, and questions left incomplete. An A is won in the detail, not the difficulty.

What does AQA A Level Maths actually reward at grade A?

AQA A Level Maths is split across three papers: two Pure Maths papers and one covering Statistics and Mechanics. Each paper is two hours. The marks are not evenly spread across question types: the longer, multi-step questions at the end of each paper carry the most marks and require students to connect ideas across different topic areas. These are the questions that determine the difference between a B and an A.

The mark scheme rewards clear, logical working. A correct answer with no working shown can receive fewer marks than a partially correct answer with all steps visible. Students who understand this write their working differently. They treat every line as a communication to the examiner, not just a route to the answer.

Show every line of working

This sounds obvious. In practice, students under time pressure skip steps they can do in their head. Each skipped step is a potential lost mark. Method marks in AQA A Level Maths are awarded for the correct process, independent of whether the final answer is right. A student who writes out every step, even on questions they find straightforward, protects their mark on every question they attempt.

AQA provides a formula booklet in the exam. Students who treat it as a safety net and look things up under pressure lose time. How should you revise A Level Maths to reach an A grade?

Reading notes does not build the skill the exam tests. A Level Maths is assessed through problem-solving under time pressure. Revision that does not involve writing out solutions to questions under timed conditions is not preparing you for what happens in the exam room. That is the single most important thing to understand about revising for an A.

Practise by topic, then by full paper

Start revision by working through questions topic by topic: integration, differentiation, trigonometry, proof, binomial expansion, and so on. Once each topic feels solid, move to full past papers under timed conditions. The jump from topic practice to full paper practice matters because A Level Maths exams mix topics within questions. A question on differential equations might require integration by parts and a knowledge of exponential functions. Practising topics in isolation builds the components. Full papers build the ability to connect them.

Use mark schemes to diagnose errors, not just check answers

After every practice question, open the mark scheme and go through it line by line. Ask: at which step did my working diverge from what the mark scheme shows? Is this a knowledge gap or a method error? The answer tells you what to practise next. Students who mark their own work this way improve faster than those who simply count up their score and move on.

Target Statistics and Mechanics deliberately

Many students spend most of their revision time on Pure Maths because it makes up two of the three papers. Statistics and Mechanics together make up the third paper, and students who underrevise them lose marks they could reliably pick up with focused practice. The Statistics questions in AQA A Level Maths are often more predictable than the harder Pure questions. Time spent on hypothesis testing, probability distributions, and data interpretation is time well spent.

What A Level Maths exam technique do top-grade students use?

Exam technique in A Level Maths is not a vague concept. It is a specific set of habits that can be practised. The students who consistently score in the A range have usually built these habits through repeated paper practice and honest self-marking, not from natural talent.

Manage time by marks, not by question

Each AQA A Level Maths paper is 100 marks in 120 minutes. That is roughly a minute per mark. A 2-mark question should take around two minutes. An 8-mark question should take around eight. Students who spend twelve minutes on a 3-mark question and run out of time on the 9-mark question at the end leave marks on the table they could have collected. Check the mark allocation before starting each question and budget accordingly.

Attempt every question, even when stuck

If a question is not yielding, write down what you do know: the relevant formula, a diagram, the first step. Method marks are available from the first line of working. A blank answer earns nothing. Even a partial attempt can pick up two or three marks that make a real difference to the final grade boundary.

Check units, signs, and rounding

A significant proportion of marks lost in A Level Maths exams come from sign errors, missed negative signs in differentiation, wrong units in Mechanics, and rounding answers to the wrong number of significant figures. These are not conceptual errors. They are careless ones. Build a habit of checking these specifically at the end of each question, not at the end of the paper when time has run out.

When self-study reaches its limit

Most students revising for A Level Maths on their own cannot diagnose their own errors with full accuracy. They know something went wrong, but they are not always sure what. A mark scheme tells them the correct working, but it does not explain why their approach diverged from it or what thinking pattern caused the mistake.
