Most families weighing up IB vs A Levels in Year 9 or Year 10 ask the wrong question first. They ask which qualification is better. Universities worldwide respect both, and both lead to strong outcomes. The real question is which one suits your child, based on how they learn and what they want to study.

This post gives an honest account of what each route involves. It covers where they differ in practice, and how to make a decision your child will not regret halfway through Year 12.

The honest version

Neither is categorically harder or better. The IB requires breadth and sustained workload. A Levels allow depth and specialisation. The right answer depends on your child, not on which qualification looks more impressive.

What does the IB Diploma actually involve?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a two-year qualification for students aged 16 to 18. Candidates study six subjects at once: three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). These are drawn from six groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Because every IB student must cover each group, nobody can opt out of humanities, sciences, or a second language entirely.

On top of those six subjects, the IB requires three core components. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) asks students to reflect on how knowledge works. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research piece. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) involves structured extracurricular engagement. Examiners assess all three, and they contribute to the final diploma score out of 45.

The IB workload

The IB demands a heavy workload from start to finish. Six subjects run alongside the core components throughout, so there is no quieter term. Students who struggle with time management or find breadth overwhelming often find this structure stressful. However, those who enjoy variety and feel confident across several disciplines tend to find it motivating.

What do A Levels actually involve?

A Level students choose three or four subjects and study each in depth over two years. Most take three, though four is common among those targeting highly competitive universities. Each A Level covers far more content than GCSE. Assessment is almost entirely through exams at the end of Year 13.

No subject is compulsory. A student who wants only sciences can take Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Someone interested only in humanities can take History, English, and Politics. This freedom is the defining feature of A Levels when compared to the IB. It is the right choice for any student with a clear sense of direction who wants to go deep rather than stay broad.

The A Level workload

A Levels concentrate pressure into exam season. Most results rest entirely on papers sat in May and June of Year 13. That means two months carry two years of work. Students who perform best under clear deadlines often prefer this structure. The risk is that a bad week during exams can undo months of preparation, which creates real pressure for some. How do UK universities view IB vs A Levels?

UK universities accept both qualifications. A typical Russell Group offer might be AAA at A Level or 36 points in the IB Diploma, and both represent a broadly equivalent standard. Oxbridge and other selective programmes make offers in both formats. Neither is systematically preferred.

Studying abroad with the IB or A Levels

For students planning to apply outside the UK, particularly in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, or parts of Asia, the IB has a practical advantage. Universities worldwide recognise it immediately. A Levels, by contrast, require individual universities to assess equivalency. Students with genuine plans to study abroad will find the IB opens more doors.

For students targeting Oxbridge or specialist UK programmes such as Medicine, Law, or Engineering, A Levels remain the more common route. An applicant reading Medicine at Cambridge with Chemistry A Level walks well-trodden ground. How does IB content compare to A Levels subject by subject?

Most universities recognise IB Maths AA HL as broadly comparable to A Level Maths and Further Maths. Maths AA SL sits roughly level with A Level Maths alone. At HL, IB Sciences broadly match their A Level equivalents, though the internal assessment and emphasis on experimental design differ from the A Level practical endorsement. English Literature HL is a demanding course that English departments regard highly.

The IB’s requirement to study mathematics and a second language means some students study subjects they would not have chosen at A Level. This is worth thinking about honestly. A student who is weak at maths and passionate about humanities may find the compulsory maths requirement a persistent source of stress. That pressure simply does not exist on the A Level route.

Should your child choose IB or A Levels?

Choose the IB if your child enjoys variety, feels confident across multiple subjects, and has strong time management. The Extended Essay and TOK suit students who like independent, reflective work. It also suits families considering international university applications.

Choose A Levels if your child knows broadly what they want to study and prefers depth over breadth. A Levels are the natural fit for students with one or two subjects they want to pursue seriously. They also suit anyone targeting UK universities with specific subject requirements, particularly Medicine, which almost universally requires Chemistry A Level.

GCSE Physics rewards two things above all others: mathematical precision and the ability to explain physical concepts in the specific language the mark scheme expects. Students who understand the physics but cannot express it clearly, or who understand it but make consistent errors in calculations, rarely reach the top grade band. The gap between a 7 and a 9 is almost never about knowing more physics. It is about delivering what you already know in the right form.

This post covers what GCSE Physics grade 9 answers look like, which topics carry the most marks, and how to prepare specifically for the top grade band.

Targeting a 9 in GCSE Physics?

What do GCSE Physics grade 9 answers actually look like?

The GCSE Physics mark scheme rewards specific physical language. “The current increases” earns fewer marks than “as resistance decreases, the current increases because current is inversely proportional to resistance at constant voltage, as given by V = IR.” Both observations are correct. Only the second is written at grade 9 level, it names the relationship, uses the correct equation, and explains the cause rather than just stating the effect.

In calculation questions, the mark scheme awards marks for method as well as for the final answer. A student who selects the right equation, substitutes values correctly, and shows every step can still claim most of the available marks even if an arithmetic error occurs at the end. A student who writes only the final answer scores one mark, regardless of whether the answer is right. Showing full working on every calculation question is one of the simplest changes that moves a student from a 7 to a 9.

Know your equations and when to use them

GCSE Physics papers include an equation sheet, but not every equation. Some equations, including some from the higher tier content, must be recalled from memory, and students are expected to rearrange them fluently. A student who knows F = ma but cannot rearrange it quickly to find acceleration under timed conditions loses marks. Practising equation recall and rearrangement across every topic until it is automatic is a non-negotiable part of grade 9 preparation.

Units matter

In GCSE Physics, incorrect or missing units cost marks even when the numerical answer is correct. A student who calculates the correct value for velocity but writes “m” instead of “m/s” loses the accuracy mark. A student who converts kilometres to metres incorrectly and propagates the error through a calculation loses multiple marks. Checking units at every step, during the calculation, not just at the end, is a habit grade 9 students develop through consistent practice rather than good intentions.

Which GCSE Physics topics should you prioritise for a grade 9?

Forces and motion, electricity, and waves are the highest-mark topic areas across all three major exam boards and appear consistently across all papers. Students who are fluent in these three areas have covered the majority of the marks available. Energy transfers, electromagnetism, and atomic structure complete the core higher tier content and are consistently tested in the harder questions toward the end of each paper.

Forces and motion

Forces and motion questions at grade 9 level include velocity-time graph analysis, Newton’s laws applied to unfamiliar scenarios, and multi-step calculations involving acceleration, force, and mass. The most common errors here are misreading graphs, particularly confusing velocity and acceleration, or misinterpreting the area under a velocity-time graph, and forgetting to include direction when describing vector quantities. Grade 9 answers are precise about vectors and always show the physical reasoning behind each step.

Electricity

Electricity questions test circuit calculations, the relationships between voltage, current, and resistance, and the behaviour of components in series and parallel circuits. At grade 9 level, students need to handle multi-component circuits confidently, apply Kirchhoff’s laws correctly, and explain the physical basis for circuit behaviour rather than just applying formulas mechanically. The distinction between series and parallel circuits, and why each behaves differently, should be explainable in precise physical terms, not just recalled as rules.

Six-mark questions

Every GCSE Physics paper includes at least one six-mark extended writing question. These questions assess the ability to construct a coherent physical argument, typically explaining a process, evaluating a method, or describing how a phenomenon occurs in a logical sequence. The mark scheme for these questions awards marks for the quality of reasoning rather than just the presence of correct facts. Practising six-mark answers specifically, then comparing them against the mark scheme’s indicative content, is one of the most valuable things a student aiming for a 9 can do in the final weeks.

How should you revise GCSE Physics to reach a grade 9?

Past paper practice with detailed mark scheme analysis is the most effective revision approach for GCSE Physics. Work through topic-sorted questions first, ensuring every calculation shows full working and every explanation uses precise physical language. Once individual topics feel solid, move to full papers under timed conditions. After each timed paper, categorise every lost mark: was it missing working, a unit error, imprecise language, or a content gap? Each category needs a different fix, and identifying the pattern early is the most efficient use of revision time.

GCSE options feel like a significant decision, and in some respects they are, but most families approaching them in Year 9 treat them as more consequential than they need to be. The choices your child makes now will shape their Year 10 and Year 11 experience and influence which A Levels are available to them. They will not, in most cases, determine the entire direction of their future.

This guide covers what actually matters when choosing GCSE options, which subjects genuinely keep doors open, and how to approach the conversation with your child without making it more stressful than it needs to be.

The most useful frame for this decision

GCSE options are less about choosing what your child will do and more about not closing off what they might want to do. Most of the thinking is about which subjects, if dropped now, would limit A Level choices later.

Which GCSE subjects are compulsory?

Most secondary schools in England require all students to take English Language, English Literature, Maths, and at least one science. Beyond these, schools vary in what they require. Some require a language. Some require a humanities subject. Some have a completely free choice beyond the core.

The EBacc, the government’s preferred suite of GCSE subjects, includes English, Maths, sciences, a humanities subject (History or Geography), and a modern or ancient language. Schools are not required to make students take the EBacc, but some do. If your child’s school requires or strongly recommends it, check whether any of the EBacc components conflict with subjects your child wants to take, language requirements in particular can limit the space available for other choices.

Which GCSE subjects keep the most options open?

Maths is the most broadly enabling GCSE subject outside the core three. A strong Maths grade supports A Level choices in sciences, economics, psychology, geography, and computing, and a weak or absent Maths grade closes off more A Level options than almost any other GCSE. If your child is choosing between Maths and something they find more interesting, the long-term case for prioritising Maths preparation is strong.

The sciences are the most commonly regretted omissions at GCSE. A student who drops to Combined Science and then discovers they want to study A Level Biology or Chemistry will find their options limited, some sixth forms require Triple Science GCSE for entry to A Level sciences. If your child has any interest in a science-related career, Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Triple Science is worth fighting to keep on their timetable.

A modern language is the subject most commonly dropped and most commonly regretted later. GCSE language grades are used as evidence of language ability well beyond school, some universities and employers ask for them specifically. A student who is genuinely weak at languages and is choosing between a language and a subject they will perform significantly better in has a reasonable case for the latter. A student who is average at languages but not actively struggling should keep one.

How should university aspirations shape your GCSE choices?

Most university courses do not specify GCSE requirements beyond English and Maths. Medicine is the main exception, medical schools typically require strong grades in science GCSEs, and some specify grades in Chemistry, Biology, or both. If your child is considering Medicine, keeping Triple Science and achieving strong grades in all three is important from Year 9 onwards.

Oxbridge admissions look at GCSE grades as part of contextual assessment. A student with eight or nine grade 9s across a broad range of subjects is in a stronger position than one with three grade 9s and five grade 6s, even if the three 9s are in directly relevant subjects. For students with Oxbridge ambitions, breadth and high performance across all GCSEs matters more than optimising subject choice specifically.

Which GCSE subjects should your child choose for the right reasons?

Beyond the strategic considerations above, the most important factor in GCSE option choices is often the least discussed: your child’s likelihood of engaging with and performing well in each subject over two years. A student who is genuinely interested in History will produce better work and get a better grade than one who chose it because it seemed sensible. A grade 8 in a subject your child enjoyed is more valuable than a grade 6 in one they endured.

The practical question for each option subject is: will your child still want to come home and revise this in May of Year 11? If the answer is confidently yes, that is a good sign. If the answer is uncertain, it is worth exploring whether there is an alternative they would find more engaging without closing off any important future options.

A note on creative and vocational subjects

Art, Drama, Music, Design Technology, and similar subjects are sometimes treated as lower-status GCSE choices. They should not be. A student who is talented in and passionate about a creative subject will often achieve their highest grade there, and a high grade in any GCSE contributes positively to an overall profile. The subjects to be cautious about are not creative ones but ones your child has no interest in and is unlikely to perform well in, those take time away from subjects that could produce better results.

How do you talk to your child about GCSE options without adding pressure?

The most useful conversation to have is not “what do you want to do when you grow up?”, most 13 or 14-year-olds do not know, and asking them to base academic choices on an answer they cannot reliably give creates unnecessary pressure. The more useful conversation is: which subjects do you find genuinely interesting? Which ones do you find difficult but manageable? Are there any you would actively dread revising for two years? Are there any that might be useful later even if they are not your favourite now?

Most students, given the space to think it through without pressure, make sensible choices. The role of a parent in this conversation is to provide the strategic context, which subjects close off certain A Levels if dropped, and then let the child make an informed decision. Overriding a child’s genuine preferences in favour of subjects they resent studying almost always produces worse grades, not better ones.

What should you check before finalising your GCSE options?

Before your child submits their options form, run through these questions. Does the combination include at least one science, and ideally Triple Science if Medicine or Engineering is a possibility? Is there at least one humanity or social science in the mix for breadth? Is a language included, even if not the first choice? Are all the core subjects, English and Maths, being given adequate preparation time alongside the options? And is there at least one subject your child is genuinely excited about, not just strategically sensible about?

If the answer to most of these is yes, the options are probably fine. If one is clearly missing, a student who wants to study Medicine but has dropped all sciences except Combined, that is the conversation to have before the form is submitted rather than after.

GCSE results day brings a mix of outcomes. Most students will have some grades they are pleased with and at least one they would like to improve. For some families, the results create a more pressing problem: a grade in Maths or English that falls short of what sixth form colleges, apprenticeships, or further study require.

A GCSE resit gives students a real opportunity to change that. This guide covers how resits work, which subjects students can resit, when and where they sit them, and how to prepare for them properly, because preparation is where most resit attempts succeed or fail.

The most important thing to understand about resits

A resit is not simply sitting the same exam again. Students who change nothing about their approach almost always score similarly. The resit works when you do something different.

Preparing for a GCSE Resit?

How do GCSE resits work?

Students can resit most GCSE subjects in the summer exam series, which runs from May to June each year. Students can also resit Maths and English Language in November, which is the more common resit window for those who sat their original exams in Year 11 and want a quicker second attempt. Most other subjects only offer a summer sitting.

There is no limit on how many times a student can resit a GCSE, and there is no age restriction. Students in Year 12, Year 13, or beyond can resit any GCSE they choose. Universities and employers will see the most recent grade, but every grade appears on the certificate. Families should keep this in mind when deciding whether a resit is the right option.

Where to take resits

If your child is still in school or sixth form, their institution will usually enter them for the resit. Those who have left school can sit resits as private candidates. This means they register directly with an exam centre rather than through a school.

To do this, families need to find an approved centre willing to accept external entries. Many schools, sixth form colleges, and independent exam centres offer this service. What does the A* in A Level Chemistry actually require?

The A* in A Level Chemistry is awarded to students who average 90% or more across their A2 papers. In other words, this means Papers 1 and 2 at A Level (Year 13), not Paper 3, which is the practical endorsement. Additionally, the AS papers do not contribute to the A* calculation. For example, a student who scores 85% on Papers 1 and 2 combined will not receive an A*. The Paper 3 performance and Year 12 results do not change this.

This matters for revision planning. In the final weeks before exams, the focus should be on maximising performance on Papers 1 and 2 specifically. These papers cover organic, physical, and inorganic chemistry across the full A Level specification. The hardest questions test chemical thinking, not memory alone.

Organic chemistry mechanisms: draw every arrow

Organic mechanisms are one of the highest-mark areas in A Level Chemistry. They are also one of the most penalised for carelessness. The mark scheme awards marks for specific arrow placements. For example, curly arrows must start from the correct electron source, such as a bond or lone pair. They must also end at the correct location. As a result, an arrow in the wrong place or pointing the wrong way loses the mark. Indeed, the rest of the mechanism does not save it. Physical chemistry calculations: show every step

Multi-step calculations are scored on method as well as the final answer. This applies to equilibrium constants, enthalpy cycles, electrochemical cells, and pH calculations. For example, a student who sets up the calculation correctly but slips on arithmetic can still claim most of the marks. However, every step must be visible. A student who writes only the final answer scores one mark regardless of whether the method was correct. As a result, showing full working on every calculation question is one of the simplest changes your child can make. It often moves an A student toward an A*.

Synoptic questions: link across topics

The hardest questions on A Level Chemistry papers are synoptic. They require students to apply knowledge from multiple topics at once. For example, a question might present an unfamiliar organic compound and ask about its reactivity, spectroscopic properties, and synthesis route. These questions separate A and A* students. In fact, most A students know the content. They lose marks because they fail to spot which knowledge to apply.

Practising synoptic questions specifically, rather than topic-by-topic questions in isolation, is essential preparation for the A*. When working through a synoptic question, the useful habit is to identify every topic before attempting an answer. Then your child should work methodically through each component. Students who rush into synoptic answers without mapping the question first consistently miss marks they were capable of earning.

How should your child revise A Level Chemistry to reach an A*?

Cover every specification point

The A Level Chemistry specification is the document that defines what the exam will test. Every question in Papers 1 and 2 is written to specification points. As a result, students who revise from textbooks without cross-referencing the specification often cover some topics in too much depth. They may also miss specification points entirely in others. Therefore, your child should download the full specification for their exam board (AQA, OCR, or Edexcel). They should work through it systematically and ensure every point is covered before moving to past papers.

Use past papers to find your child’s loss patterns

Your child should sit full past papers under timed conditions and mark them against the scheme. The next step is keeping a record of which topics often cost marks. Most A Level students have one or two areas where they regularly lose marks: often equilibria, organic synthesis, or spectroscopy. Therefore, spotting these patterns early and addressing them specifically is more efficient than revising every topic equally. In practice, the weeks before the exam are too short for broad revision.

Read examiner reports

AQA, OCR, and Edexcel all publish examiner reports after each exam series. These documents describe in plain language what set the top responses apart from average ones. Specifically, they flag which mechanisms were drawn incorrectly, which calculation steps were missed, and which command terms were misread. As a result, your child should read two or three examiner reports on their hardest topics. In fact, this is one of the most efficient uses of revision time. However, few students do it.

A predicted B with a university offer conditional on an A is one of the most common and most stressful positions a Year 13 student can be in. It means the current trajectory is not enough and that something needs to change before the exams. It does not mean the offer is out of reach.

The gap between a B and an A in A Level is smaller than it looks from the outside. In most subjects and most exam series, it is between 10 and 20 raw marks on a paper, roughly 5 to 10 percentage points. That gap is almost never a knowledge gap. It is almost always a technique and consistency gap. This post covers what that means and how to close it.

Why predicted grades underestimate final grades

Predicted grades are a snapshot of January or February, not a ceiling on May or June. Most students perform above their predicted grade in the real exams. Acting on a predicted B now is what makes the difference.

What does the gap between a B and an A in A Level usually come down to?

Students who consistently score in the B range in A Level exams are not short of knowledge. They typically understand the content well. Mark scheme precision

A Level mark schemes are specific. In sciences, they require exact terminology, not a paraphrase, not a near-synonym, the specific word or phrase the examiner is looking for. In essay subjects, they require a particular level of analytical depth, specific types of evidence, and a conclusion that addresses the exact question asked rather than the general topic. A student who understands the chemistry, history, or economics but writes answers that are slightly off the mark scheme’s specific language consistently scores B-band marks even when they knew the answer.

The fix here is deceptively simple: study mark schemes, not just past papers. Read every mark point for questions you have attempted. For every mark you did not receive, ask whether you said something different or something less precise. Build a list of the exact phrases, definitions, and constructions the mark scheme rewards in your subject and practise using them in every answer you write.

Consistency across a full paper

Many B-grade students score very well on the questions they find comfortable and drop marks on anything outside that comfort zone. An A-grade performance requires a consistent score across the full paper, including the questions at the end that are specifically designed to be harder, and the question types that appeared less frequently in the past papers you revised from.

When sitting practice papers, track not just your total score but your score by question type. If you consistently drop marks on data analysis questions, on multi-step calculations, or on the longer essay questions at the end of the paper, that is the specific area to address. Revising the topics you find easiest does not close a consistency gap.

Handling unfamiliar questions

A Level examiners deliberately include questions that test application of knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. These questions are not testing whether you have seen this specific question before, they are testing whether you can think with the knowledge you have. Students who freeze or skip these questions lose the marks that most clearly separate B from A grades.

The approach to unfamiliar questions is not to have seen every possible question type. It is to have a method: read the question carefully, identify which topics are being combined, apply what you know to each component methodically, and write something, even a partial answer, rather than leaving it blank. Marks for partial answers on hard questions are often the difference between a B and an A.

What should you do between now and your A Level exams?

Find your specific loss patterns

Sit two or three past papers under timed conditions and mark them question by question against the scheme. Do not average out the marks and move on. For each question you lost marks on, categorise the loss: was it terminology, missing a step in a calculation, a mechanism drawn incorrectly, an essay that did not deploy enough evidence, a conclusion that did not address the question? Each category tells you something different about what needs to change. Most B students have two or three consistent loss patterns, not twenty. Identifying and fixing those specific patterns is more efficient than revising every topic again.

Practise at A-grade standard, not B-grade standard

When writing practice answers, compare them not against the minimum marks needed for a B but against what a full-mark response looks like. A Level examiner reports describe top-band answers specifically, the terminology used, the level of analysis, the structure of the argument. If you practise to B standard, you will produce B standard answers in the exam. Practising to A standard means using the right language, showing every step, and writing conclusions that directly address the question, in every practice answer you produce between now and the exam.

Get feedback on your written answers

Self-marking past papers is useful but limited. Most students mark their own answers charitably, they know what they meant to say and they read their answers in the light of that knowledge. A tutor who reads your answers without that context can identify much more quickly whether the mark scheme would award the marks you gave yourself. A single session in which a tutor marks three or four of your practice essays or calculation answers against the mark scheme and explains exactly why each mark was or was not awarded is often worth several hours of self-directed revision.

Others are looking at results across the board that do not reflect two years of effort. In both cases, the first question is the same: is there still time to turn this around?

The short answer is yes. The more useful answer is: it depends on what you do next, and how quickly you start doing it. This post is for parents who have seen the mock results and want to understand honestly what is possible between now and the real exams.

What mock results actually tell you

Mocks are diagnostic. A grade 4 in February with focused revision from March is not a grade 4 in the final exam. The period between mocks and the real exams is designed for recovery, and it is enough time to make a real difference.

How much can realistically change between GCSE mocks and real exams?

A lot. Students move two or three grade levels between mock results and final exams every year. This is not unusual, it is expected. The final exams are sat after months of targeted revision with full knowledge of the specification.

What should your child do in the two weeks after GCSE mock results?

The two weeks immediately following mock results are the most important period of the whole GCSE course. Students who act quickly and purposefully in this window recover ground. Students who feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start often let another month slip by before doing anything meaningful.

Go through the mock paper with the mark scheme

Sit down with your child and their mock papers within a week of getting results back. Go through each question they lost marks on and look at the mark scheme. For each lost mark, ask: did they not know the answer, or did they know it but write something that didn’t match what the examiner was looking for? The distinction is crucial. Mark scheme misalignment is often faster to fix than a genuine content gap, it is a habit rather than a knowledge problem.

Build a subject priority list

List every subject and note two things against each: the current mock grade and the grade your child needs. The subjects where the gap is two grades or more and the exams are earliest get priority. The subjects where your child is already at their target grade get less time. Most students revise the subjects they enjoy most, because it feels productive and is not uncomfortable. The marks they need are almost always in the subjects they have been avoiding.

Start focused revision immediately, not after half term

The instinct after a difficult mock period is often to take a break before starting revision in earnest. This is understandable and partially sensible, a student who is exhausted and demoralised needs some recovery time. But “I’ll start properly after half term” often becomes “I’ll start properly in April” and then the time has gone. A manageable amount of focused revision starting now is worth far more than an intensive burst that begins too late.

How should you talk to your child about disappointing GCSE mock results?

How you respond to mock results at home matters. A student who hears primarily catastrophising, conversations about what the results mean for their future, comparisons to what other people got, expressions of disappointment that are repeated, is more likely to freeze than to mobilise. That is not because they don’t care. It is because anxiety narrows focus, and a student under significant anxiety finds it much harder to sit down and do the work.

The most useful framing is honest and practical. Acknowledge that the results were not what either of you hoped for. Be clear that there is time to change them. Then focus the conversation entirely on what happens next, which subjects, which topics, how much revision per day, and whether a tutor would help. Action is the antidote to the paralysis that bad mock results can cause, and your child needs help identifying what that action looks like.

Start earlier

The preparation timeline that was adequate five years ago is no longer adequate for competitive schools. Starting in Year 5 is still the right time for most families, but starting at the beginning of Year 5 rather than the middle matters more than it used to. For families targeting the most oversubscribed schools, starting in the second half of Year 4 gives the preparation time needed to be genuinely competitive.

This does not mean drilling a nine-year-old with practice papers from the first week of Year 4. It means introducing topics like verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and problem-solving Maths gradually, at a pace that builds understanding rather than anxiety. A tutor who works with younger children understands this balance.

Prepare more thoroughly, not just more intensively

The children who are now competing for grammar school places are not just well-prepared, they are thoroughly prepared. They have worked through multiple practice paper sets. They are fluent in all the major question types. They can maintain accuracy under timed conditions. They have practised handling difficult questions they cannot immediately answer, rather than freezing or leaving them blank.

If your child’s preparation has consisted mainly of working through a CGP book and doing a few practice papers, that is probably not enough for a competitive school in 2026. The preparation needed is more structured and more specifically targeted at the exam formats your child’s target schools use.

Choose target schools carefully

Not all grammar schools have become equally more competitive. A family who was borderline for a highly oversubscribed school five years ago may now need to rethink their target schools, or significantly increase their preparation.
