Why does your child need a Year 7 Maths workbook at home?

The jump from primary to secondary maths catches a lot of families off guard. Topics move faster, classes are larger, and the curriculum assumes a level of independence that many Year 7 students haven’t yet built. How to Use These Year 7 Maths Workbooks Together

Buying three books and leaving them on a shelf helps nobody. Here’s how our tutors suggest using them.

Start with the CGP Student Book when your child encounters a new topic at school, or, better yet, just before they encounter it. Reading ahead by even a week means they walk into the lesson already familiar with the vocabulary and methods, which makes everything in class land more easily. This is particularly useful for students like Leia, who are capable of understanding plenty of the material themselves but just need something to work from.

After they’ve read the notes and tried the Student Book’s own exercises, move to the CGP Targeted Workbook for extra practice. This is where fluency is built. If your child can do the warm-up questions quickly and accurately, they’re ready to move on. If not, that’s a sign the topic needs more time, and that’s perfectly fine.

The Collins workbook works best as a weekend stretch. Pick a topic your child covered earlier in the term and try the reasoning questions. These are harder, and your child might not get them all right straight away. That’s the point. Sitting with a problem that doesn’t immediately yield an answer is exactly the skill that separates a Grade 7 from a Grade 5 at GCSE.

What Year 7 Maths Actually Covers

Parents sometimes assume Year 7 maths is just a repeat of primary school. It isn’t. The KS3 curriculum builds quickly on what your child learned at primary and introduces topics that feed directly into GCSE.

A typical Year 7 maths course covers number work including negative numbers, factors, multiples and primes, along with algebra where students start forming and solving simple equations and working with sequences. Fractions, decimals and percentages appear with more depth than at primary level, as do ratio and proportion. Your child sits down with a past paper, works through the questions, then opens the mark scheme to check their answers. The final answer is right. The marks are not. It happens constantly in GCSE maths, and the reason is almost always the same: the mark scheme is being read as an answer key rather than as a set of instructions for the examiner.

A GCSE maths mark scheme tells the examiner exactly what to award a mark for, step by step. Once your child understands how it works, they can write their working to match it. That shift alone is often worth several marks per paper.

The real issue

Most marks lost in GCSE Maths are not lost through wrong answers. They are lost because the right method was not shown clearly. The mark scheme rewards working, not just the final number.

What does a GCSE Maths mark scheme actually tell you?

Every mark in GCSE maths is categorised. M marks go to the right method. A marks go to the correct answer. B marks are awarded independently for specific correct values. ft marks, short for follow-through, reward consistent working even when an earlier error was made. Each category tells you something different about what the examiner is looking for.

A question worth 4 marks rarely carries all four on the final answer. Your child needs to write working that earns each mark separately. Knowing the categories is the first step to doing that.

What M marks mean

M marks are method marks. The examiner awards them when your child demonstrates the right mathematical approach, regardless of whether the final answer is correct. Set up the right equation, apply the right formula, or identify the right technique, and the M mark is earned even if an arithmetic error follows.

This matters more than most students realise. A student who sets up a problem correctly but miscalculates can still pick up two out of three marks. A student who writes only the correct answer, with no working shown, may receive just one.

What A marks and ft marks mean

A marks are accuracy marks. They follow M marks and require both the correct method and the correct answer. ft marks are follow-through marks: if your child makes an error early in a question but carries it through consistently to the end, the examiner can still award marks for the correct process. An error in line two does not have to cost marks in lines three, four, and five. This is why showing every step is so important.

How should you use a GCSE Maths mark scheme for revision?

Work through a past paper question, then open the mark scheme and go through it line by line with your child. For each mark listed, ask: is this step visible in their working? Is it written clearly enough for an examiner to follow? This is a different exercise from simply checking whether the answer is right.

The goal is to train your child to think about presentation as part of answering. Most students in GCSE maths know enough to score higher than they do. The gap is often in how they show their working, and that is a habit that can be built with practice.

Compare your working to the mark scheme in detail

Take three or four past paper questions and work through them together. Attempt each question first, then open the mark scheme and identify exactly which marks were earned and which were not. Then write out a model answer that would earn every mark. Repeat this across several sessions and the pattern of what examiners reward becomes familiar.

Read the examiner notes

GCSE maths mark schemes include notes that explain what counts as a valid alternative method. These notes tell your child where the examiner has flexibility and where they do not. A student who reads these notes learns the principles the mark scheme is testing, not just the worked solutions. That understanding transfers to questions they have never seen before.

What do grade 9 answers look like in GCSE Maths?

Grade 9 questions ask your child to apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations. The mark schemes for these questions often include notes like “accept any valid method” or “award marks for equivalent approach”. That phrasing is worth paying attention to. The examiners are rewarding mathematical reasoning, not a memorised procedure.

Your child should read these notes closely. Understanding where the mark scheme is flexible gives them confidence when a question looks unfamiliar. They are looking for a valid approach, and knowing that changes how they tackle new problems.

Show every step, without exception

The most consistent piece of feedback from GCSE maths examiners is that students lose marks by skipping steps. Each line of working can carry its own mark. A student who jumps to the answer, even the correct one, risks losing method marks on every multi-step question. One extra line of working can be the difference between a grade 7 and a grade 8.

It is a habit. It takes a few sessions of deliberate practice to build, but once it is in place it applies to every question on every paper.

But for many students, the real gains come from having someone read their working and tell them specifically what the examiner would and would not award marks for. The challenges of further maths

Two weeks into A Level Further Maths, one of my students, fresh from a Grade 9 at GCSE, was already thinking of dropping it. Not because she wasn’t smart, but because she hadn’t expected the pace to be so fast and the workload so heavy.

How to Get a 9 in GCSE English Language?

GCSE English Language is one of the most misunderstood exams at GCSE level. Students often prepare for it by learning lists of techniques, metaphor, personification, sibilance, and then spotting them in texts and naming them. That approach produces a grade 5 or 6. It does not produce a grade 9.

A grade 9 in GCSE English Language requires something different. The examiner wants to see a student who reads analytically, writes with genuine control, and can explain the effect of language choices in specific, thoughtful terms. This post covers what that looks like on both papers, for both students and parents supporting their revision.

The difference between a grade 6 and a grade 9

A grade 6 answer identifies a technique and says what it does generally. A grade 9 answer explains the specific effect it creates in this text and connects it to the writer’s broader purpose. That thinking gap is what separates the two grades.

Aiming for a 9 in GCSE English Language?

What do GCSE English Language grade 9 answers actually look like?

The mark schemes for GCSE English Language describe top-band reading answers as “perceptive” and “detailed.” They describe top-band writing answers as “compelling” and “sophisticated.” These words sound vague, but they have a precise meaning in practice. Perceptive means the student has noticed something about the text that is not obvious. Compelling means the writing has a clear voice, varied structure, and deliberate effect on the reader.

Both qualities are learnable. Neither requires exceptional natural ability. They require practice, good feedback, and a clear understanding of what the examiner is rewarding.

Go beyond identifying techniques

The most common reason students plateau in GCSE English Language is that their analysis stops at identification. “The writer uses a metaphor” earns one mark. “The writer uses a metaphor to suggest the character is trapped, positioning the reader to feel pity before the tension builds” earns four. The technique is only the starting point. The effect on the reader, the tone it creates, and how it connects to the wider purpose of the text are where the marks live.

Train yourself to ask three questions about every technique you find: What does it mean literally? What does it suggest? Why has the writer chosen it here, at this point in the text?

Use specific evidence, not general summaries

Grade 9 answers quote precisely and briefly. They do not copy out three lines of text and then make a general comment. How do you improve GCSE English Language writing for a grade 9?

The writing section of GCSE English Language is where many students leave marks behind. They write competently but not distinctively. A grade 9 piece of writing has a clear voice, a sense of structure, and deliberate choices at the sentence level. These are habits that can be built.

Plan before you write

Students who spend five minutes planning before they write consistently produce better work than those who begin immediately. A plan does not need to be detailed. It needs to establish three things: the overall effect you want to create on the reader, the structure of the piece, and two or three specific techniques you will use deliberately. Writing with a plan means every paragraph has a purpose. That sense of control is what examiners describe as “sophisticated.”

Vary sentence structure deliberately

Grade 9 writing uses sentence structure as a tool. A very short sentence after several long ones creates emphasis. A sentence that begins with a subordinate clause builds anticipation before the main point lands. Repetition used purposefully creates rhythm. These are not tricks. They are the same techniques the student analyses in the reading section, applied in their own writing. Write in chains, not statements

The longer questions in A Level Biology, typically worth 4 to 6 marks, reward chains of reasoning rather than lists of facts. Each point should lead to the next: cause, mechanism, effect. If the question asks you to explain how a nerve impulse is transmitted, the A* answer does not list steps. It connects them. Depolarisation occurs because sodium ions move in along their electrochemical gradient. This reverses the membrane potential. How should you revise A Level Biology to reach an A*?

A Level Biology covers a large volume of content across two years. Students who try to revise everything equally tend to run out of time before the harder topics get the attention they need. A* revision is deliberate. It prioritises the topics that carry the most marks and the question types that most students answer poorly.

Read examiner reports, not just mark schemes

Every exam board publishes examiner reports after each sitting. These documents explain in the examiner’s own words what distinguished the top answers from the average ones. They identify the misconceptions that cost students marks and the phrases that consistently appeared in A* responses. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback in A Level Biology examiner reports is that students write everything they know about a topic rather than answering the specific question. If the question asks you to explain why the rate of photosynthesis decreases at high temperatures, the answer is about enzyme denaturation and the loss of the active site shape. It is not a full account of the light-dependent and light-independent reactions. What does AQA A Level Maths actually reward at grade A?

AQA A Level Maths is split across three papers: two Pure Maths papers and one covering Statistics and Mechanics. Each paper is two hours. The marks are not evenly spread across question types: the longer, multi-step questions at the end of each paper carry the most marks and require students to connect ideas across different topic areas. How should you revise A Level Maths to reach an A grade?

Reading notes does not build the skill the exam tests. A Level Maths is assessed through problem-solving under time pressure. Revision that does not involve writing out solutions to questions under timed conditions is not preparing you for what happens in the exam room. That is the single most important thing to understand about revising for an A.

Practise by topic, then by full paper

Start revision by working through questions topic by topic: integration, differentiation, trigonometry, proof, binomial expansion, and so on. Once each topic feels solid, move to full past papers under timed conditions. The jump from topic practice to full paper practice matters because A Level Maths exams mix topics within questions. A question on differential equations might require integration by parts and a knowledge of exponential functions. Practising topics in isolation builds the components. Full papers build the ability to connect them.

Use mark schemes to diagnose errors, not just check answers

After every practice question, open the mark scheme and go through it line by line. Ask: at which step did my working diverge from what the mark scheme shows? Is this a knowledge gap or a method error? The answer tells you what to practise next. Students who mark their own work this way improve faster than those who simply count up their score and move on.

Target Statistics and Mechanics deliberately

Many students spend most of their revision time on Pure Maths because it makes up two of the three papers. Statistics and Mechanics together make up the third paper, and students who underrevise them lose marks they could reliably pick up with focused practice. The Statistics questions in AQA A Level Maths are often more predictable than the harder Pure questions. Time spent on hypothesis testing, probability distributions, and data interpretation is time well spent.

Manage time by marks, not by question

Each AQA A Level Maths paper is 100 marks in 120 minutes. That is roughly a minute per mark. A 2-mark question should take around two minutes. An 8-mark question should take around eight. Most students revising for A Level Maths on their own cannot diagnose their own errors with full accuracy. They know something went wrong, but they are not always sure what. A mark scheme tells them the correct working, but it does not explain why their approach diverged from it or what thinking pattern caused the mistake.
